There has been a lot of China bashing lately, in line with the culture of hate driven by the neo-con right-wing hate machine blaming China for this and that. This hate message has been packaged for sale and profit. The latest is a T-Shirt by German designer Philipp Plein that reads "F-U-C-K You China, Manufactured in Europe" on the back as reported here After public outrage, a company official explains that the phrases really means: “the fascinating & urban collection: kiss you China”. Yeah right, so the next time say F*** You, I meant really meant "fascinating urban collection kiss you". The US Goverment and right-wing media's Anti-China message is stupid: Message 1: China profits from cheap labour. That $149.99 Nike Air Jordan shoe cost $2.99 to make in China. Guess who makes $147. It's not the worker in China, India, Bangladesh, or ___[insert third world country here ]____. Message 2: China is manipulating the dollar. Yeah those crappy clothes, shoes and dollar store stuff adds up to about a trillion American dollars. You don't just put that kind of money under the matttress. China invests it by buying American debt and does end up supporting the dollar. But without this support, the dollar would collapse, so the George Bush chickenhawks need to know what they're talking about. A better question is how George Bush and Sith Cheney blew $499,999,999,999.99 US on Iraq and devalued the dollar. Message 3: China is a threat to climate change. Yeah those Chinese factories are bad. But the most of China's production is export to the Walmarts of the world, not the poor Chinese peasant. At issue really is the rampant and excessive consumption of Western society. Message 4: China makes cheap (crappy) stuff Quality is a specification dictated by the Buyer. In this case, marketers have a vested interest selling crap to you, the American consumer. The stuff you bought last year has to break down or go out of fashion for you to buy again this year. Europe is suffering from the low US Dollar and Chinese Yuan. But attention should really be on something else... US Foreign Policy and the Mult-national Mega Corporations. |
