Health Canada has reported that a brand of baby carrots has been contaminated. After doing a little research, we find that baby carrots are actually large carrots, ones which are mechanically peeled from knobby or twisted carrots that won't normally sell. This waste was fed to pigs. Saving food is a good thing, but the consumer need to be aware of some facts. Baby carrots are much more profitable, often selling for $1-$2 per pound when regular carrots are at least 50% cheaper. Baby carrots have only 70% of the beta carotene of normal carrots. They use a species of carrots that grows faster and longer, and softer for the mechanical peeler. While they taste sweeter, baby carrots have less flavour. Try them side by side. It is not recovering food waste anymore. Carrots are specifically grown and peeled to be baby carrots. Despite the smaller size, it sells for twice the price. And look at all those plastic bags. Maybe we should just go back to the simple carrot, even if it looks a little twisted. It has less waste, better taste, lower price, and less risk of contamination. http://www.wisebread.com/baby-carrots-the-frugal-idea-that-isnt |
